I thought there was cake in the fridge,
and got out an empty white dish
the cake was not there
the fridge mostly bare
and now there's a craving for fish

I thought I had gone back to school
but class seemed a little un-cool
I looked at the floor,
ran straight for the door
and joined in a good game of pool

I had a good time at the park
And then it became very dark
My expression was sad
It seems that you're glad
I thought I was right on the mark

What happens to a dream deferred?
Does it stab you
Like a polished blade?
Or pretend to care-
And then fade?
Does it stare like a pair of eyes?
Or eat at your ear-
Like a girl telling lies?
Maybe it just weakens
Like a growing hate.

Or does it asphyxiate?

All is well
right after the bell
that lets us out of school

I tripped and fell,
screamed "Agh! What the hell?"
and I felt like a really big fool

"Please pass the salt!"
I said to an adult
who didn't respond right away.

I said, "Gimme the salt!"
they said "Sorry, my fault"
then I sprinkled and sprinkled away.

"My pencil is broke!"
I gasped with a choke
and looked for my spare stash of pens.

"These pens are no good!"
but I thought that they would
so someone has ruined my pens!

Realizing although         Charms to see through
Obvious that               Hate, mistake
